The Guerrilla Girls have descended on London to bring you their latest campaign, “Is it even worse in Europe?”, which takes a look at diversity in European art organisations.
Nearest Tubes: Aldgate East, Liverpool Street, Tower Gateway
This anonymous activist group, formed over 30 years ago, has spent decades organising protests and undertaking campaigns that aim to tackle head on issues of sexism and racism in the art industry. Through a combination of stark facts, bold posters and humour, the Guerrilla Girls have committed themselves to exposing the reality of inequality in the art world.
Their new commission recently launched in London’s Whitechapel Gallery, and revisits their 1986 poster which stated “It’s even worse in Europe”. They present the responses of various European art organisation directors to questionnaires sent out about their exhibitions and collections. These include some startling results, for example, of the 101 institutions that responded, only 2 have 40% or more female artists in their collection.
The Guerrilla Girls take an unapologetically critical look at these surveys, highlighting the areas where they feel the art world has a long way to go before achieving equality. This exhibition is well worth a visit and offers a refreshing take on a topical issue.
Entry is free and opening hours are 11am-6pm every day (closed on Mondays, 9pm close on Thursdays).
